Common problems

Injector faults are not always obvious.

Misfires, fuel smell, hard starting, smoke and poor economy can all point toward injector trouble, but proper testing helps separate injector faults from ignition, wiring, compression or fuel supply issues.

Jetronic

Jetronic injector issues

K Jetronic and older Jetronic systems can suffer from stale fuel deposits, sticking mechanical injectors, uneven opening pressure, poor spray cones and brittle seals.

  • Hard starting after storage
  • Uneven idle or poor hot starts
  • Fuel odour around old hoses or seals
GDI

GDI injector issues

Direct petrol injectors work at higher pressures and finer tolerances, so spray quality, deposits, leakage and sealing problems can quickly affect combustion.

  • Misfires under load
  • Poor economy or fuel smell
  • Carbon and deposit-related spray faults
Port

Port injector issues

Port injectors commonly suffer from restricted filters, tired seals, varnish, poor atomisation, blocked nozzles and uneven flow across a set.

  • Rough idle and hesitation
  • Uneven flow between cylinders
  • Dribble instead of a clean spray pattern
Diesel

Diesel injector issues

Diesel injector faults can show as hard starting, smoke, diesel knock, poor economy, rough running, excessive leak-back or fault-code led running issues.

  • Black, white or grey smoke
  • Knock, rough running or non-start
  • Replacement may need coding or matching
Piezo

Piezo injector issues

Piezo petrol injectors need careful identification and specialist testing. Electrical faults, deposits and incorrect handling can make replacement expensive.

  • High replacement costs
  • Fine tolerance faults
  • Testing suitability confirmed first
Cold start

Cold start valve issues

Cold start valves and older enrichment injectors can leak, stick, block or over-fuel, especially on classic vehicles that have spent time in storage.

  • Rich cold starts
  • Long cranking
  • Fuel smell after shutdown
Seized

Seized injector issues

Long storage, heat, corrosion and carbon can leave injectors stuck, blocked or difficult to remove. Assessment first helps avoid unnecessary damage.

  • Injector stuck in rail or head
  • Blocked after stale fuel
  • Removal or recovery advice needed
Service parts

Seal and filter basket issues

Old seals can leak and old filter baskets can restrict flow. Aggressive additives can also damage internal service parts instead of solving the root problem.

  • Perished O-rings or seals
  • Blocked or damaged filter baskets
  • Fuel leaks after refitting
Rail

Fuel rail and hose issues

Older hose-to-rail assemblies can suffer from cracked hoses, tired clips, leaks and contamination inside the rail or feed lines.

  • Fuel smell around rail
  • Unsafe old hose or clips
  • Contamination reaching injectors

What to do next

Do not guess from symptoms alone.

The same symptom can come from several causes. For example, a misfire could be injector flow, spray pattern, coil, spark plug, compression, wiring or ECU related.

Send the injector type, vehicle details, fault codes, symptoms and photos where possible. We can advise whether testing, servicing, removal help or replacement is the right next step.
